Part Four: "Hillbilly Camper Kit"

February, 2015

Now that the walls are complete, it's time to switch gears and re-think the process a bit.  The walls are too tall to put everything together in the garage so we are hauling it down to my brother's shop.

Unfortunately, the weekend we picked to haul our project happened to be in the middle of a blizzard!  But we had all our materials and completed walls strapped down to the trailer, so we left in the snow with our load!

Here is our Hillbilly Camper Kit ready to leave for the 1 1/2 hour trip that ended up taking over 3 hours!

After arriving at the shop it took awhile to thaw the ice and clean up the mess, but soon after we started the assembly process.  After months of building the trailer and the walls we finally get to see her going together!

Here is the first wall being put into place!

And then there were two!

As you can see we used straps to hold the walls vertical as we bolted and glued them into place.

We gave the glue a chance to set a bit, then we were back at it installing the spars that connect the walls side to side.  As we added spars, we also installed the bamboo ceiling on the inside as we went.

When you look at me on top the camper, you can get a feel for how large this "little" camper really is...

Our camper almost has an inside!

And at the front...

We glued the ceiling to each individual spar and we used prop rods on the inside of the coach to hold it in place.  The reason for this is because we didn't want any screws or nails in the ceiling.

There were a total of 51 supports by the time we were finished.

Next time we'll be framing windows and installing insulation!

Happy Creations!
